Angoûleme

Angoûleme is a capital of BD (bandes dessinées) and a prefecture of the department of Charente.

This quiet, beautiful town is home to numerous artists, boasting a lush green landscape set upon its hilly terrain. So get ready for the ups and downs while walking around.

In this article I'll show you my favorite spots in the city, where you can spend time productively and have fun. Many of these locations are imbued with creativity.

During the summer months, particularly in July and August, Angoûleme takes on a more tranquil atmosphere, resembling a serene oasis. This is an excellent time to explore it without the hustle and bustle.

As September approaches, the streets gradually become more populated, mainly by students, infusing the city with vibrant energy.

Whether you're planning a brief 1-3 day visit or an extended stay, this list will serve as a valuable guide.

  • Gare d'Angoûleme. When you arrive in Angouleme by train, you're immediately immersed in its vibrant comic book atmosphere – BD characters can be spotted all around.

  • L'Alpha médiateque. Situated right on the other side of the railway, you can access the médiathèque via a bridge from the train station. If you're seeking a quiet work environment, this is the perfect spot. Not only is it free, but the ambiance is also quite unique.

  • Champ de Mars shopping. For those who enjoy shopping (unlike me), this location offers a swift and efficient shopping experience in the city. A direct road cuts through the center, minimizing distractions and offering mass-market chain shops.

If you are questioning where to spend time with children in Angoûleme in summer, the playground near Champ de Mars will be a perfect place. Along with the usual playground features, you'll also find fun musical instruments for children to enjoy.

Check out our map to explore Angoûleme on foot. I've marked walking routes in red, beginning from the train station. The area with cafes is highlighted in yellow:

If you're ready for lunch (note that French lunchtime is usually between 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM), this section of the city is perfect for satisfying your appetite with its diverse dining options. Once you've enjoyed your meal, take a leisurely stroll around and continue your exploration.

  • Hôtel de Ville. (Note, it is not actually a hotel, hôtel de Ville is used to name town hall or 'mairie' in French ). At the center of the city stands the Hôtel de Ville, a significant architectural marvel that serves as the town hall.

Everywhere you go in Angoûleme, you can notice here and there characters from BDs on the walls. Don't miss out on capturing these unique art pieces.

  • Halles d'Angoûleme. Famous market under the roof; offering not only fresh produce but also a selection of spots to grab a snack, coffee, or a more substantial meal.

  • Marionette theatre. Little hidden treasure. If you're planning an overnight stay in Angoûleme, check the agenda, you would be pleasnatly surprised.

  • Le Lieu dit. Conclude your day with dinner at Le Lieu Dit, a charming restaurant that offers a distinctive atmosphere. If you are a fan of cool and at the same time strange locations, this one would be a good choice. It provides a blend of French cuisine with street food options framed into the captivating ambiance.

P.S. For those who want an authentic Angoûleme experience, I recommend:

  • Musée de la Bande Dessinée

  • Festival de la Bande Dessinée. While the festival is a great event to attend, keep in mind that the weather during this time is cold and gloomy – not recommended for outdoor aerial dance activities.

Explore, enjoy, and make the most of your time in Angoûleme!
